Frequently Asked Questions

How does metempo work?

metempo gives you ongoing 1:1 teaching from a real musician, without having to schedule a lesson every week.

Your teacher gives you focused things to work on, answers questions, watches and listens to what you send, and helps decide what comes next. You can send messages and practice clips as you work, on your own schedule.

Each week, your teacher formally reviews your progress and shapes the next step.

What is a topic?

A topic is one focused piece of your playing.

It might be a voicing, a groove, a technique, a section of a song, an ear-training exercise, or anything else your teacher wants you to focus on.

Each topic has a clear goal, an assignment, and teaching from your instructor. Your teacher may pull from material they already use with students or create something specifically for you.

Instead of trying to “learn jazz piano” or “get better at guitar,” you always know what you’re working on right now.

What happens between weekly reviews?

You don’t disappear for a week and come back with your homework.

Ask questions. Send a video. Tell your teacher something isn’t working. Ask them to demonstrate something again.

Your teacher can respond with feedback, clarification, a short video, or an adjustment to what you’re practicing. The weekly review gives the relationship a regular cadence, but the conversation continues in between.

Is metempo a live lesson?

No. metempo is asynchronous, which means you and your teacher don’t have to be online at the same time.

That’s the point.

You can practice when it works for you, send something when you actually have a question, and get feedback connected to the work you’re doing rather than waiting for your next scheduled lesson.

How often will I hear from my teacher?

Your teacher stays involved throughout the week, and each student has a regular weekly review day when the teacher takes a fuller look at their progress and decides what comes next.

metempo isn’t instant messaging, so responses aren’t always immediate, although sometimes they are, but you usually hear back within a day or two. It’s ongoing teaching designed to fit naturally into both your schedule and your teacher’s.

What’s the difference between Light and Full?

Light gives you one active topic at a time. It’s a simple way to have a teacher guide the most important thing you’re currently working on.

Full gives you up to four active topics, so you and your teacher can work on several parts of your playing at once.

Both memberships include direct communication with your teacher and a regular weekly progress review.

Do I have to practice every day?

No.

Your teacher helps you build work that makes sense for your actual life. Some students practice every day. Others have a few good sessions each week.

metempo is less concerned with keeping a streak alive than with helping you spend your practice time on the right things.

Do I need to send videos?

Video and audio make it much easier for your teacher to hear what you’re doing and give useful feedback, so you’ll be encouraged to send clips as you work.

They don’t need to be polished performances. A phone recording is usually exactly what your teacher needs.

When you’re ready to wrap up a topic, you can send a final clip for your teacher to review before deciding what comes next.

What happens if I’m traveling or have a busy week?

Keep the conversation going.

Your teacher can adjust your assignments, give you listening work, ear training, theory, score study, visualization exercises, or simply make the week lighter.

metempo is built for people whose schedules change.

Is metempo an AI platform?

No. metempo is built around real teachers and real 1:1 relationships.

We do use AI to help teachers do their job well, including organizing teaching material, helping shape clear goals and assignments, and reducing some of the administrative work behind the scenes.

Your teacher decides what you should work on, evaluates your playing, gives you feedback, answers your questions, and decides what comes next. AI supports the teacher. It doesn’t replace them.

What level of student is metempo for?

Everything from beginners to professional musicians.

Some students are learning their first songs. Others are working on improvisation, repertoire, auditions, composition, technique, or very specific problems in their playing.

What matters most is that you have something you want to get better at.

Who are the teachers?

metempo teachers are working musicians and experienced educators who we know and trust.

We’re deliberately not an open teacher marketplace. We work with a small, hand-picked group of musicians whose teaching we believe in.

Can I change teachers?

Yes. If the fit isn’t right, contact us and we’ll help you find someone else.

Do I need my own instrument?

You need regular access to an instrument for most kinds of study, but you don’t necessarily need to own one.

Depending on what you play, renting an instrument, using a practice room, or practicing on a school or studio instrument may be perfectly fine.

What is the time commitment?

There isn’t a required number of hours.

metempo is designed to make the time you already have more useful. Your teacher can shape assignments around whether you have twenty minutes, two hours, or a particularly busy week.

Can metempo replace private lessons?

For some students, yes. For others, it works well alongside occasional live lessons.

Traditional lessons concentrate teaching into a scheduled hour. metempo spreads that relationship across the week: practice something, run into a problem, send it, get feedback, keep going.

They’re different ways of learning, and some students use both.

What is the cancellation policy?

You can cancel your membership at any time. Canceling stops future renewals, and you’ll continue to have access through the end of your current billing period.

If you’re within your first 14 days, contact us and we’ll refund you in full, no questions asked.

After that, payments already made are non-refundable and aren’t prorated.
